LAGRANGE, Ga.—Agnes Scott Volleyball split a tri-match with Berea and LaGrange on the final day of the regular season on Saturday. The Scotties made their they secured a playoff berth with a 3-0 win over Berea in their first match of the day before getting edged by the Panthers in the final contest of the day 3-2.
The Scotties move up their mark to 8-22 and 2-10 in the USA South.
Match One: Agnes Scott 3 – 0 Berea (25-16, 25-13, 25-21)
The Scotties rolled to a win in their opening match of the day by sweeping the season series with the Mountaineers. Unlike the first matchup between the two sides, Agnes won all three sets to snap an eight-match losing streak dating back to their last win against the Mountaineers.
Four different Scotties registered at least seven kills, while Paige Heck (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the way with 12 and a .321 hitting percentage in the three-setter. Agnes Scott hit above the .200 mark as a team for the sixth time this season.
Anna Tomkins (Chapel Hill, N.C.) set up 27 balls and had a career-high 10 service aces to pace a potent Scottie attack. Bonnie Derks (Sylva, N.C.) and Tomkins shared 30 digs to keep the defense sharp.
Agnes Scott was never truly threatened in any set as the Mountaineers never held more than a one-point lead at any point.
Match Two: Agnes Scott 2 – 3 LaGrange (18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 11-15)
The Scotties had a chance to claim a 2-1 series win from the Panthers. Agnes Scott won the first meeting 3-0 in a non-conference matchup, but LaGrange swept the Scotties in Decatur just a week later in a conference-counting match.
LaGrange was one of the hottest teams in the West Division coming into the afternoon and they showed why with a quick 25-19 win in the first set. Agnes was not to be outdone though as the Scotties outlasted the Panthers by three points in the second to even the score.
Tied at 10 in the third set, Agnes Scott ran off eight consecutive points to put plenty of distance between them and the home side. LaGrange was able to creep within a few as four points of the Scotties, but Agnes Scott took care of business in the late stages to take an overall match lead 2-1.
A back-and-forth fourth set was eventually taken ahold of by the Panthers with a couple of small runs, while Agnes wasn't able to string points together in the final third. The Scotties kept it close at 21-19, but LaGrange went on a 4-0 run to force a final set.
The Panthers only trailed early on in the fifth, but otherwise kept the Scotties from gaining any momentum to win.
Morgan Pearson (Pensacola, Fla.) led ASC with 12 kills, while Resa Knott (Atlanta, Ga.) added another 10. Tomkins added another 30 assists to her day total, while Bella Kammerer (Mount Sterling, Ky.) dug up 14.
The Scotties clinched the sixth seed in the USA South West and will head to Maryville on Halloween night to take on third-seeded Piedmont. The winner will play Maryville in the second match of the evening.
