DECATUR, Ga.—Agnes Scott Volleyball closed out its 2017 home schedule with a well-fought loss in four sets to Brevard College. The Tornados attack was stellar all night, but the Scotties fought back to win the third set and extend the match. Brevard took the overall match 25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-16.
The Scotties see their record dip to 7-21 on the season, while Brevard improves to 13-6 in their first season as a transitioning Division III member.
The two-headed attack of Hannah Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) and Stephanie Lambert (Florence, Ky.) was tough for the Scotties to contain for much of the evening. Elmore consistently found the back corner with a powerful stroke to keep the Scotties off balance as the Tornados rolled through the first two sets.
Brevard's offense slowed down a bit in the third set as the Scotties raced out to a 9-1 advantage only to see the Tornados storm right back. Facing a second three-set loss to the Tornados in as many meeting, Agnes Scott showed plenty of resolve by winning the final seven points of the third game to take it 25-20.
The Tornados never looked back in the fourth set though, leading by as many as nine points in a coast-to-coast win, 25-16.
Elmore finished with a game-high 19 kills and .378 hitting percentage, while Lambert added another 12. Josie McElroy (Lenoir City, Tenn.) dished out 45 assists, while Maggie Weiss (Clemmons, N.C.) had 29 digs.
Bonnie Derks (Sylva, N.C.) was the offensive leader for the Scotties with nine kills in her final collegiate match at the Woodruff Gymnasium. Anna Tomkins (Chapel Hill, N.C.) had 24 assists, while tying with Derks for the team lead in digs with 14. Alexis Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) had a solo block and a block assist.
The Scotties head to LaGrange on Saturday for the final day of the regular season against the Panthers and Berea. A win will send the Scotties into USA South playoffs beginning next week.
