Scotties Struggle on Day 1 of Huntingdon Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Agnes Scott College's volleyball team faced their first two defeats of the season this afternoon, as they dropped two matches at the Huntingdon College Invitational on Friday. WIth the losses, the Scotties fall to 3-2 on the young season.

In the opening match against NAIA Faulkner University, the Scotties kept all three games close, but were unable to break through and take a game from the Eagles (4-9). The Scotties were led by Bonnie Derks and Paige Heck, who each registered 8 kills. Anna Tomkins contributed 21 assists in the match, and Bella Kammerer led all players with 19 digs.

In the second contest, the Scotties seemed to get back on track, as they raced to a lead and held on for a 25-23 win in the opening stanza.  However, the Hawks would dominate the second game, using two separate 9-point scoring runs to run away with a 25-9 win.  In the final two games, the Scotties would fall behind early, and narrowly miss out on pushing the match to a 5th game, eventually falling 23-25, 25-9, 25-22, 25-19 to the Hawks (4-7).

Against the Hawks, the Scotties were led offensively by Heck, who had 10 kills, and Tomkins, who logged 7 kills to go along with 21 assists. Kammerer and Morgan Pearson had 15 and 13 digs, respectively, to lead the Scotties on defense.

The Scotties will have two more matches today at the tournament, facing off with Pensacola Christian College, before finishing the tournament against LaGrange.
