Lee Shines on Day 1 of ITA South Regional


DECATUR, Ga. - The Agnes Scott College tennis team opened their season today, as they competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III South Regional. The event is being co-hosted by Emory University and Agnes Scott College, and all six Scotties were able to compete in front of a supportive home crowd at the Byers Tennis Courts today.

Junior Taylor Lee had a stellar start to her season, as she went 3-0 for the day. In the B Draw singles, she advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals after taking out Amanda Blackwell of Piedmont College in the first round by a score of 6-3, 6-2, and following that up with an upset over Birmingham Southern's Emily Whitlock, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.  She finished off her day with an 8-6 win the C Doubles with partner and classmate Jumana Master, as they fended off Karina Rivera and Tatiana Burkett of Piedmont to advance to the semifinals against Covenant's Annie Deluca and Jennie Spielman tomorrow at Emory at 3:00 p.m.

Making solid debuts for the Scotties were first-years Olivia Rivas and Jasmine Keiler, who both went 1-1 in singles on the day. Rivas downed Burkett, 6-4, 7-6(3) before falling to Alana Owens of Birmingham Southern. Keiler took out Carli Jones of LaGrange, 6-0, 6-1, before falling to Lexie Dillard of Birmingham Southern. Junior Anastasia Bennett dropped a tight 6-3, 7-5 match to Gracie Smith of Covenant in the B draw, before rebounding in the consolations to take out Jabreann Thigpen of Belhaven, 6-0, 6-0. Master also fell in her first match in C singles, before coming back for a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Madeline Wurster of Belhaven.

In the doubles, Rivas and Bennett advanced to the C doubles semifinals after a win over Jones and Lee of LaGrange, 8-3.  Their run would come to an end at the hands of Delong and Maddux of Centre College, as they advanced to the final over the Scottie duo, 8-3.

The tournament concludes on Saturday, as Agnes Scott will host several consolation matches, including Master, Rivas and Keiler.  Play begins for the Scotties on the Agnes Scott campus at 9:00 a.m. Lee and Bennett will play at Emory at 9:00 and 10:00, respectively.
