FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.) picked up her first USA South Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday morning. Ackerson made 11 saves to help the Scotties to their first home victory of the season, a 2-1 result over nearby rival Oglethorpe.
Ackerson was nothing short of sensation on Saturday as she repeatedly kept the Scotties in the game with stops in big moments. After giving up an early goal to the Stormy Petrels, Ackerson made nine consecutive saves to close out the game, including a pair of close-range rejections that prevented the visitors from going up two goals.
Eventually, the Scotties answered back at the end of the first half and controlled possession at the start of the second before Caitlynn Croft (LaGrange, Ga.) scored the game-winner in the 78th minute.
Ackerson's save output was the third highest of her career and highest of the season to date. She entered the day with 13 saves in four appearances.
She has started 95% of Agnes' matches since taking over the role early in her rookie season.
