Tornados Spoil Home Debut for Scotties

Tornados Spoil Home Debut for Scotties

DECATUR, Ga.—New USA South member Brevard scored a goal in each half to spoil Agnes Scott Soccer's home debut at Gellerstedt Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tornados got the scoring started in the 25th minute when they capitalized after spreading out the Agnes Scott defense. A ball got pushed wide to the right side to Sallie Riggan (Wilmington, N.C.), who was able to beat her mark to the corner. Riggan pulled the ball back briefly before sending a pass to the far post where it met the left foot of classmate Mai Sakuma (Japan) for her first collegiate goal.

Sakuma had some chances to feed herself with several dangerous crosses on corner kicks, but Agnes' defense was able to alleviate the pressure with some sound set-piece defense.

The rest of the half built toward a potential equalizer for the home side, but a few close chances did not translate into a goal for the Scotties.

Brevard was able to tack on a quick goal to start the second half after had Agnes Scott dictated play before the halftime whistle and quickly turned its sights to defense to close out the shutout.

The Tornados held a 21-8 shot advantage overall and 14-5 on frame.

First-year Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.) made 12 stops for the Scotties despite the losing decision in net. Brevard freshman Rebeccah Rojas (Murrieta, Calif.) saved all five shots on target.

Agnes Scott (0-6-1) heads just across town for its shortest trip of the season at Emory on Saturday for a 7 p.m. start.
