FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—Agnes Scott Women's Basketball was predicted to finish the 2017-18 season the same way they finished the 2016-17 season at seventh in the USA South West. The league's coaches voted in the preseason poll this week and do not vote for their own team.
Maryville and Piedmont were deadlocked atop the West Division with 46 points apiece, while sharing the eight first-place votes evenly. LaGrange finished third with 33 points, while Huntingdon and Berea were just a touch behind with 31 and 29 points respectively.
Covenant, Agnes Scott and Wesleyan rounded out the rest of the poll. Brevard is not eligible for preseason placement due to their reclassifying from Division II.
The Scotties will have a new head coach for the second consecutive season, although the direction remains the same as Coach Albie Biggs served as an assistant last season.
Agnes Scott will have the defending USA South Rookie of the Year, Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) at their disposal after the sophomore averaged a double-double in a sensational first season. Grant scored nearly 18 points a game and added another 10.9 rebounds per game to boot to pace the Scottie offense.
The Scotties will have to replace some of their scoring from a season ago, but have veteran leadership to fill in voids in the back court.
Agnes Scott opens its season with a busy three days in Montgomery, Alabama where they will face Rust, Bob Jones and Pensacola Christian in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by Huntingdon beginning on November 16.
