DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott College saw their basketball season come to an end this afternoon at home in the Great South Athletic Conference final, falling to Pine Manor College, 65-54. The loss, which came a day after an emotional, come-from-behind 50-45 victory over the #1 seed, Finlandia University, ends the season for the Scotties (8-14, 4-3 GSAC).
The first half of play was a tight affair, with the Scotties being led by 13 points from Brittaney Howard, who also hauled in 5 rebounds in the half, as the Scotties would control the glass, 23-15. Pine Manor would go into the locker room on top by 3, leading 34-31.
The second half would remain close until the Scotties went cold from the field. Miranda Arnold hit a jumper with 8:45 remaining on the clock, putting the Scotties within 1 point at 45-44. The Scotties would then go nearly five minutes without a field goal, as the Gators (13-9, 2-0 GSAC) would build a 54-44 lead before a Care Bacon field goal brought the Scotties back to an 8-point deficit with 3:55 to go. Unlike the night before, there would be no miraculous comeback, as the Gators held their composure and closed out their first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
For the game, Howard would lead all scorers with 18 points, while Arnold would chip in with 10. Both players would also haul in 9 rebounds to lead all players. Kisha Simpson, who was limited to 23 minutes due to foul trouble, also contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds, after returning from a month off due to injury.
Senior guard Shavonne Orr is the lone senior for the Scotties, playing in her final game. She finished the season as the Scotties leading scorer with 11.6 points per game. The Scotties improved on the previous season by five games (3-16 to 8-14) and advanced to the conference final for the first time.
