Fitzgerald Garners USA South Second Team Nod

Fitzgerald Garners USA South Second Team Nod

ROME, Ga.—First-year KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) was the lone Scottie represented on the 2019 USA South Conference Softball Awards list as released by the conference on Thursday morning. Fitzgerald, who transformed into a dominant force for the Scotties down the stretch, was named as an at-large nod on the USA South West Division second team.

Fitzgerald was one of the prime factors in an improved Scottie offense that relied more on the deep ball than in any season of recent memory. The rookie catcher knocked four balls out of the park, a team-high, all of which came over the final half of the season.

After a slow start at the plate, Fitzgerald's place in the middle of the lineup was cemented by the time conference play was getting into thanks in part to a torrid stretch that saw her hit safely in 12 of 14 games to end the season. That stretch included a nine-game hit streak, which was the longest in recent program history. The two-week streak earned the catcher USA South Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending April 7.

Fitzgerald was also an important piece behind the plate, throwing out a conference-leading 11 base stealers.

She finished the season with team-best marks in average (.352), hits (31), home runs (4), doubles (5), on-base percentage (.406) and slugging (.545). Fitzgerald also finished second on the team in RBI with 15.

Pfeiffer University's Vada Blue Sherrill was named Player of the Year, Maryville College's Katlyn Smith was named Pitcher of the Year, Salem College's Brianne Coleman was named Rookie of the Year, Averett's Hannah Thompson was named Rookie Pitcher of the Year and N.C. Wesleyan College's John Brackett collected Coach of the Year honors. Additionally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All awards are voted on by the softball coach at each institution. The divisional team voting is completed only by those coaches in the particular division. The first team all-conference and individual award voting are completed by all coaches.

Junior Alexei Young (McDonough, Ga.) was the team's representative on the USA South All-Sportsmanship team.
