ROME, Ga.—First-year KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) has been named the USA South Rookie of the Week in the sport of softball after a dominant week at the dish. Fitzgerald posted team highs in hits, runs scored, RBI and home runs during a 1-3 week for the Scotties.
Fitzgerald has surged to the top of the leaderboard in nearly every offensive category for the Scotties over the last month of the season. After a slow start, Agnes Scott's starting catcher has suddenly become one of the hottest hitting players in the entire USA South. In four games, Fitzgerald hit safely in eight of 14 at-bats, hitting three balls out of the yard and registering a team-high 7 RBI.
The first-year has recorded at least one hit in each of the team's last eight games. Classmate Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala.) held the previous high this season with a hit in six straight games. The streak is the longest in over five years for the Scottie program.
Due to a blistering week, Fitzgerald now leads the Scotties in hits (27), home runs (4), average (.351) and slugging (.571). She also leads the conference in throwing out runners with nine caught stealing.
Agnes Scott is back in action on Wednesday when they head to Montgomery to take on Huntingdon at 5 and 7 p.m.
