LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Agnes Scott College softball team braved the cold on Thursday afternoon, but were downed by LaGrange College (4-0) in both games of a doubleheader held today, by scores of 8-2 and 9-3. The Scotties (0-4) were plagued by errors in the first game, and were unable to match the firepower of the Panthers in the second.
In the first game, the game was neck and neck through 4 1/2 innings before the Panthers exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th, all of them unearned as the Scotties committed 4 errors in the inning. Casey Arnold suffered the loss on the mound, after going 4 1/3 innings, striking out three batters and allowing 5 runs, only two of which were earned.
In the nightcap, the Scotties defense clamped down, but the Panthers once again had one big inning which led to the difference in the final score. In the bottom of the 4th, with the score knotted at 3-3, the Panthers would plate two runs with one out before Danielle Newbern would put the game out of reach with a bases-clearing grand slam to account for the final score, and Olivia Wolfe would hold the Scotties scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win. Holly Jones would suffer the loss for the Scotties, lasting 3 1/3 innings while allowing 9 runs, all of them earned. Arnold would pitch the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
The Scotties will have little time to regroup as they return to the field on Saturday for their home opener against Covenant College, who are also from the USA South Conference. Game times are 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and admission is free to the public.
